Friday, February 16, 2024 was Environmental Justice Day at the State Capitol, and NEJI spent it lobbying for enlightened and inclusive state legislation in the buildings.

HB 1263: Making environmental justice the law in Georgia
HB 1263 is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to advance environmental justice legislation in Georgia. This bill establishes an Environmental Justice Commission composed of 22 members and mandates an environmental justice report before taking any action that may negatively impact the health or environment of any community in the state.
The environmental justice report will include at a minimum:
1. The impact of the proposed action on said community.
2. Alternatives to any proposed action, including no action.
3. Any short-term and long-term effects of the proposed action, as well as any potential adverse and beneficial economic effects on the community.
4. Mitigation measures proposed to avoid or minimize the adverse impact of any proposed action.
5. Cumulative impacts on the community caused by unrelated pollution sources or facilities or adjacent effects, such as increased truck or commercial traffic, which may have disproportionately discriminatory impacts on such communities.
It’s About Justice! It’s About Civil Rights! it’s About Fair Treatment and Meaningful Engagement of All
